Bharat Ratna andPadma Awards full list 2019

Awards not only boost our self-confidence but also increase the faith we have in our work. Bharat Ratna and Padma Awards are the civilian awards that are bestowed upon the top personalities for their distinguished work in various fields.

The Bharat Ratna

Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian award of the country. It is awarded in recognition of exceptional service or performance of the highest order in any field of human endeavour. The number of Bharat Ratna Awards is restricted to a maximum of three in a particular year. The recommendations for Bharat Ratna are made by the Prime Minister to the President of India.

This year the president conferred Bharat Ratna on former president and congress leader Pranab Mukherjee, Late Nanaji Deshmukh and Bhupen Hazarika.

The Padma awards

Padma awards were instituted in the year 1954. The award is given in three categories, viz. Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. Padma Vibhushan is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service. Padma Bhushan is awarded for distinguished service of a high order. Padma Shri is awarded for distinguished service.

These awards are given in various fields. The list of the fields is as follows:

  1. Art (music, cinema, photography, painting etc.)
  2. Social work (social service, charitable service, community projects etc.)
  3. Science and Engineering (space engineering, nuclear science, information technology etc.)
  4. Trade and Industry (banking, business, economic activities etc.)
  5. Medicine (medical research, allopathy, naturopathy, homoeopathy etc.)
  6. Literature and Education (journalism, teaching, promotion of education, education reforms etc.)
  7. Civil Service (distinction/excellence in administration by government servants)
  8. Sports (popular sports, athletics, adventure, mountaineering, promotion of sports)
  9. Others (fields not covered above and may include propagation of Indian culture, protection of human rights, wildlife protection/conservation etc.)

These awards are conferred by the President of India at ceremonial functions which are held at Rashtrapati Bhawan usually in the month of March/April every year. The award consists of a Sanad (certificate) signed by the President and a medallion. The recipients also receive a small replica of the medallion, which they can wear during any ceremonial functions. It’s up to them. The names of the awardees are published in the Gazette of India. The award does not amount to a title. The recipients cannot use it as a suffix or prefix to their name.

This year the list comprises 4 Padma Vibhushan, 14 Padma Bhushan and 94 Padma Shri Awards. 21 of the awardees are women. The list includes 11 persons from the category of Foreigners/ NRI/PIO/OCI, 3 posthumous awardees and 1 transgender person.
