2018 Bollywood Star Movie Things: Something unusual happened last year. The most anticipated movie of 2018 –‘Thugs Of Hindustan’ sank without any trace at the box office, even critics could not help but dismiss the movie that saw two of the biggest superstars of Bollywood come together for the first time on silver screen.

What made the disaster unusual is the involvement of Mr. Amir Khan in the movie who most often than not is touted as –‘Mr. Perfectionist’. He, who can never go wrong with his choices of movies. He who has path-breaking and box office shattering films like-‘PK’,’3 Idiots’,’Dangal’,’Tare Zameen Par’ under his belt and he who has not had any flop in last decade. Alike every other time, this time also audience geared up to watch another AmirKhan biggie that is generally high on content, acting, entertainment, and a deep social message.

That Amir Khan was teaming up with another superstar of his stature, Mr. Amitabh Bachhan along with Katrina kaif and Fatima Sana Sheikh elicited unprecedented response among fans and movie freaks before its release and even it saw the highest earning on an opening day for any Bollywood, movie ever.

The stage was set for another perfect Amir Khan starrer movie but once the first show was over, the fate of the movie could be well imagined. Next few days ensured that the disaster was imminent and eventually it sank without any trace.

But Amir Khan is not the only one who had a lackluster year, other two big purveyors of movies, Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan also failed miserably to make a mark. While Salman Khan’s ‘RACE 3’ had been a victim or thing of ridicule from the day its trailer released for its science defying actions and over the top dialogues, Shahrukh Khan’s “Zero” slated to release on December 21, garnered huge anticipation and expectation among his fans where The King Khan was supposed to portray the role of a physically deformed person equipped with wit and path-breaking for the first time.

Giving him company were two leading actresses- Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif. But it seems that the Indian audience has indeed come a long way from watching the movies where a rather uneducated dwarf, a bomb of confidence and wits, manages to impress a scientist with his funny antics and ditches her on their wedding day to mingle with a beautiful leading actress. Reason for his such acceptability among women?

That is shrouded with mystery though. Mr. overconfident dwarf being dumped by the actress to find a place in the space craft and staying in the moon for 14 years and then again coming back to Earth only added to the misery of audiences. And Shahrukh Khan, once the undisputed king of Bollywood and romance, nearly lost a good chance to revive his dying career.

Though it will be very early to write off the Khans, it is clearly visible that success of a movie no longer depends on the name of the star. If any thing it is reliant on, then it must be the ‘CONTENT’. Undoubtedly, content is the king now and the success of rather small scale movies with not so big names last year reflected this new diktat.

While ‘Badhai Ho’ starring Ayushman Khuranna and Sanya Malhotra scored high on bringing the taboo related with the thing of pregnancy at older age on screen , ‘Andhadhun’ another small budget, Ayushman Khuranna starring movie has been entitled as the ‘Best Movie Of The Year’. Packed with some brilliant acting and high paced thrilling moments, it surely kept audience at the edge of the seat for nearly two and half hours.

That people are still talking about the movie and dissecting its climax, well describes its success. No doubt we need more movies like this in near future.

Bollywood got a new thing to boast about with ‘Stree’ a horror-comedy movie featuring Rajkumar Rao and Shradhha Kapoor, earning both critical acclaim and box office success.

Unlike the leading actors, our leading actress, Deepika Padukone did not fail to mesmerize us with her most awaited film ‘Padmavaat’ despite different hurdles and scuffles things. Accompanying with her hubby Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor, she gifted her audience a visual and emotional treat. Audience did not disappoint her too as it raked in 300 crores in its lifetime. No doubt she has been the most talked about celebrity in the year 2018 and we hope she continues to rave success in coming years too.

Now let’s address the elephant in the room called ‘Sanju’, the biggest film of the year, if not the best. Based on the controversial life of our very familiar Sanjay Dutt, and helmed by mastermind Rajkumar Hirani , this movie rejuvenated the career of very talented Ranbir Kapoor with its huge success.

While there remains questions if the director friend of Sanjay Dutt whitewashed all the allegations against him, it still continued to lure audiences to the movie hall with some intriguing thing and compelling act from Ranbir Kapoor and the supporting cast featuring Paresh Rawal, Vicky Kaushal, Sonam Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Manisha Kairala.

Now the thing is,contrary to the situation of the senior leading actors, Akshay Kumar was in his usual form, enjoying all the attention for his 3 back to back successful movies starting with ‘Padman’ and followed by ‘Gold’ and ‘Robot 2.0’.

2018 has been a year of quite a few surprises and let downs, atleast for bollywood fans. Now let’s see what thing is in store for us in 2019. Afterall, Bollywood has some times been more filmy than its films.
